School roundup: Marblehead softball runs past Masco

Heads-up baserunning was the difference for Marblehead in a 3-2 win over Masconomet Thursday at Topsfield.The game was tied, 1-1, heading into the top of the seventh inning. Carly Score led off with a single (McKenna Barrett pinch-ran for her). Alexa Gross followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Barrett attempted and scored on a delayed steal of home and in the process, Masco threw the ball away, allowing Gross to score from second, giving Marblehead a 3-1 lead. The Magicians closed out the game on a 6-4-3 double play.Sarah Hastings pitched (7 innings, 8 hits, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks, 1 earned run). Kathryn Digiammarino led the offense (2-3, double, 1 run scored).Swampscott 15, English 1At Swampscott, the Big Blue got a solid outing from pitcher Angela Vousboukis (5 innings, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts) and some offense from Nikki Gioiosa (2-for-3, bases-loaded double); Tori Thistle (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Stephanie Collins (2 hits). Swampscott is 6-7 with Danvers on tap Monday.English got its run in the fourth inning when Lauren Pohlmeyer reached on a single and scored on a Taylor Newhall (2-for-2) double. Victoria Oliva pitched and had a hit. Keila Lantigua also had a hit. English is 0-13.Whittier 16, Tech 1At Lynn, the Tigers scored their run in the last inning with Rallanny Diaz driving in Pirsa Gutierrez with a single. Diaz also made some nice plays at third including one where she doubled a runner off second. Tori Park (9 strikeouts) took the loss. Tech is at North Shore Tech today.Everett 5, Saugus 1At Everett, the Sachems (10-3, 9-2 NEC) made five errors including four in the fourth inning that led to four Everett runs. Nichole Lowe went six innings, allowing five hits, striking out two and not walking a batter. None of the runs were earned.Saugus scored its run in the fourth inning when Gabby Cogliano tripled and came home on a Melissa Toomey RBI single. Cogliano went 2-for-3 with two triples.Winthrop 11, Mt. Alvernia 1At Mount Alvernia, Winthrop (7-7) was in a close game early on, but the Vikings had a five-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to pull away. Leading the Winthrop attack was Rachael Delsolio (3-4, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBI). Liana Ferullo helped out (3-5, 1 SB, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI). Andrea Martucci had a strong day at the plate (3-5, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI). Pitcher Alex Ferri had another strong performance (5 innings, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk, 2 hits).BOYS TENNISSt. John’s 5, CM 0At Danvers, the Prep clinched the Catholic Conference title for the seventh year in a row. The Eagles (12-1) haven’t lost the title since 2004 and have won it 21 of the last 22 years dating back to 1990. Yesterday’s winners were Cam Troisin, first singles, 4-6, 6-2, 15-13; Bradley Noyes, second singles, 6-0, 6-0; Dan Cunningham-Niko Limacher, first doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Matt Walter-Mark Corvi, second doubles, 6-0, 6-0.Gloucester 5, Classical 0At Breed, the Rams (0-9) had a strong match from Jonathan Dorson and Eric Rondeau, who lost 1-6, 6-7, in second doubles.Everett 4, St. Mary’s 1Everett 5, St. Mary’s 0At GE Field, the Spartans (4-7) finished up a suspended game against Everett and lost 4-1 and then lost the regularly scheduled match, 5-0.John Shea and Alex Maghsoudi won 6-4, 7-5, in the suspended match. Maghsoudi is an eighth grader and it was his first varsity match. In the regularly scheduled match, Dennis Bertocchi lost 4-6, 6-7, in probably the best match he’s played, at second singles, coach John Wynne said. Grant McKinnon lost a three-set match at third singles.GIRLS TENNISArlington Catholic 3, St. Mary’s 2At Arlington, the Spartans (8-4) got wins from Corina Pinto at third singles, 6-3, 7-5 (she’s 10-1) and the second doubles team of Kat Troisi-Emily Hatchouel, 7-5, 6-0.
