Baseball: English keeps tourney hopes alive

With its postseason hopes on the line, the English baseball team was six outs away from seeing those hopes come to an end as it trailed Revere, 4-2, at Fraser Field on Monday.The Bulldogs, however, fought back and thanks to a 3-run dinger from Junior Santos and an RBI single from Randale Lora, English rallied for a 6-4 win over the Patriots.English (7-10) got two hits from Lora, Drew Gentile and Andrew Napoleon. Alan Iraheta started, with Dana Stevens coming on to get the win in relief. Ben Bowden worked a perfect seventh for the save.The Bulldogs need wins against Classical on Wednesday (4) and then must sweep the Clancy Tournament to reach the postseason.Danvers 7, Marblehead 4At Twi Field in Danvers, the Falcons (15-3, 12-2) wrapped up the NEC South title once again as Scott Hovey drove in two runs and picked up the save in relief of Nick Gikas.Dan Connors also drove home a run as the Falcons broke open a close game in the sixth inning.Winthrop 8, Swampscott 7At Winthrop, the Big Blue (10-6, 8-5 NEC South) committed six errors to let this one get away.”We handed them the game, that’s all you can say,” Swampscott coach T.J. Baril said.Frank Legere, Mike Walsh and Nick Meninno had two hits each for Swampscott, who hosts conference leader Danvers tonight (6:30) in a make-up game.St. John’s (D) 10, St. John’s (S) 6At Danvers, the Prep (12-5) got a much-needed win as Pat Connaughton drove in four runs and Andrew Donahue had a pair of RBI.Sean Patrikas was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Eagles. Rob DiFranco picked up the win, going the final 3 1/3 innings in relief of Ryan Pantaleo.Gr. Lawrence 5, Tech 3At Lawrence, Luis Falcon pitched five strong innings, allowing two earned runs, but the Tigers couldn’t rally back from an early deficit.Lynnfield 8, Ham-Wen 2At South Hamilton, the Pioneers (12-5) got three hits and three RBI from John Festa and two RBI from Rick Berardino in the win. Dylan Costa went the distance to get the win, allowing two earned runs and scattering eight hits.
