Tennis: Classical boys win first of season against rival English

The Classical boys tennis team recorded its first win of the season, defeating English 4-1 at Classical Tuesday.”My team was very excited with the win today; it was like they won the championship,” Rams coach Chris Hayward said.Winners for Classical (1-13) were: Seng Ly over Badril Prihantono, first singles (6-0, 6-2); Nick Gonzalez over Mike Gately, third singles (6-1, 6-1); Rene Perez and Philip Chea over Kevin Em and Shivam Patel, first doubles (6-7, 6-4, 6-4); Jonathan Dorson and Eric Rondeau over Diego Vasquez and Leo Barrios, second doubles (6-7, 6-4, 6-4). English’s (1-11) lone winner was Kerlay Der over Narith Say, second singles (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).Swampscott 5, Winthrop 0At Swampscott, Swampscott (10-3) winners were: Matt Jacobs, first singles (6-0, 6-0); Val Temin, second singles (6-0, 6-0); Matt Gilberg, third singles (6-2, 6-0); Josh Lunder and Ben Friedman, first doubles (6-2, 6-2) and Vadim Katsemba and Mike Pindrus, second doubles (6-0, 6-4).Marblehead 5, Revere 0At Marblehead, Magicians freshman Chris Wigglesworth led the way, winning at first singles (6-1, 6-1). Other winners for Marblehead were: Tyler Gelineau, second singles (6-0, 6-0); Jason Frost, third singles (6-2, 6-4); Miles Barry and Austin Harshbarger, first doubles (6-2, 6-0) and Steven Goldman and Tyler Beck, second doubles (6-1, 6-2). Marblehead is now 10-2.St. Mary’s 3, Spellman 2At St. Mary’s, the Spartans (6-8) kept their state tournament hopes alive. They got wins from: Dennis Bertocchi, first singles (6-2, 6-1); Grant McKinnon, second singles (6-3, 6-3) and Dave Deschenes, third singles (6-3, 7-5).Cambridge 3, Danvers 2At Cambridge, Falcons winners were: Nick Lisichenok, first singles (6-1, 6-1) and Gabe Ochonski, second singles (6-2, 6-2). Danvers is 11-7.GIRLS TENNISSwampscott 3, Danvers 2At Danvers, Swampscott’s Rita Tsokanis (15-0 individual record) continued her dominance this season. Tsokanis won first singles (6-2, 6-0). Other winners for Swampscott (12-3) were: Tatum Peterson, third singles (6-0, 6-2) and Francesca Pelletier and Shannon Toner, first doubles (6-1, 6-0).English 4, Revere 1At English, the Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 7-5 record, one of their best in years. Scarlett Santana won at first singles, 6-0, 6-1; Thanh Bui, second singles (6-0, 6-2); Daniella Krische, third singles (6-1, 6-3) and Alise Rittershaus-Kelly Santana, first doubles, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Jennie Cao-Kim Ma lost in three sets at second doubles, 6-1, 3-6, 4-7.St. Mary’s 5, Nazareth 0At Nazareth, St. Mary’s senior Kelsey Barrasso played and won her first-ever singles match at third singles (6-1, 6-0). Other winners for St. Mary’s were: Megan Fitzgerald, first singles (6-0, 6-0); Lauren Carifio, second singles (2-6, 6-0, 6-2); Carina Pinto and Emily Hatchouel, first doubles (6-0, 6-0) and Kat Troisi and Nicole Ferrari, second doubles (6-0, 6-0). St. Mary’s is now 11-6.Peabody 5, Austin Prep 0At Peabody, the Tanners’ Alaina Warren led the way, winning at first singles (6-1, 6-1). Other winners for Peabody were: Sarah Athas, second singles (6-4, 6-4); Jamie Donahue, third singles (6-4, 6-4); Kayli Lohman-Rachael Gillis, first doubles (6-2, 6-2) and Erica Reeves-Michelle McCarthy, second doubles (6-0, 6-1). Peabody is 10-5.Masco 4, Lynnfield 1At Masco, the Pioneers’ Karen Kelter and Jordan Miller won at second doubles (6-3, 7-5). Lynnfield is 9-4.
