Repeat after me. The Bruins will find their power play. They will refrain from taking stupid penalties. The referees won’t make any cheap calls. And Tim Thomas will stand on his head for the fourth time in this series and lift the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals. All right. Asking for all of that is probably about the same as asking the U.S. economy to stage a dramatic recovery, for gasoline prices to come down to at least reasonable levels, and for the job market to open up and embrace every unemployed person in America.I’m sure we’d all settle on Thomas standing on his head again, because that’s the most likely way the Bruins will beat the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight for the right to take their chances with the Vancouver Canucks in the finals. That’s how they’ve won two of the other three games. And that’s generally what happens in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Hot goalies win championships. It’s happened enough times to the Bruins. There was Ken Dryden in 1971, Bernie Parent in 1974, and a whole lot of others since. You don’t have to go back too far (2004) to remember the number Jose Theodore of the Canadiens did on the B’s.And it’s not just the Bruins. The Detroit Red Wings rode Dominik Hasek to a Stanley Cup in 2002, and Patrick Roy won the Conn Smythe Award three times.Thomas has followed a pattern in this series: unbeatable on one night; beatable the next.In Games 3 and 5, Thomas was like the impregnable wall in front of the net. In Nos. 4 and 6 ? not so much.Well, I know my numbers. And “seven” is an odd number. So I fully expect Tim Thomas to follow form tonight and keep the wolves outside the door. The Bruins don’t have a problem scoring when it’s been even-Steven.Problem is, they keep both teams in the game when they’re on the power play ? and, Wednesday night, anyway, were even worse when Tampa Bay had the man advantage. So, obviously, the formula here is simple. Stay out of the box ? decline all power plays (either that or find the one they’ve obviously lost), and give Mr. Thomas a clear view of all shots. He’ll do the rest.Steve Krause is sports editor of The Item.
