Saugus welcomes new principal for Lynnhurst School

SAUGUS – The Saugus School Committee welcomed new Lynnhurst principal Lori Gallivan Thursday night.?She brings a wealth of knowledge,” said Superintendent Richard Langois. “We are delighted to have her here.”Gallivan is a Saugus resident and has had prior experience in Lynn and in Newburyport. “She provides a diverse background to Lynnhurst,” said Langois. “Everyone has supported her recommendation.”The new principal is anxious to begin her new role. “I am so excited,” said Gallivan. “I have been very impressed with the teachers, parents and everybody.”?I know I have big shoes to fill,” said Gallivan. “I will do my best to continue with the great tradition.”In other news, history teacher Krista Hoey of Saugus High School was named a 2011 Presidential Academy Award recipient.Hoey will attend a three-week traveling course for teachers in Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. to learn more about important historical documents to enrich their students? lives in the upcoming fall.Hoey will be one of 60 teachers participating in this event. 180 teachers applied to participate. This is her first year teaching.?She motivates students and challenges them in innovative ways,” said Carol Wagner, Saugus social studies specialist for grades 6 through 12. “You will represent Saugus in a wonderful way.”While most teachers look forward to their summers as a time to relax Hoey is looking forward to a summer of intense learning. “I am looking forward to it,” said Hoey. “I just got a 70-pound box of the books I need to read. I have a lot to read.”Hoey plans on staying a few extra days in D.C. to travel. She is excited about the fall to teach her students what she learned from this experience. “It will help me continue opening the eyes of all my students to what there is out there outside a textbook,” said Hoey.Hoey is not the only one excited for her upcoming trip, the school district is as well. “We are proud of what you?re doing and what you are going to do,” said Langois.
