SALEM – A Lynn man charged with shooting another man during a gang-related drive-by incident last year on Oneida Street is being held at the Middleton Jail on $50,000 cash bail following his arraignment.Kevin Terrero, 21, of 382 Chestnut St., pleaded innocent Tuesday in Salem Superior Court to armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, carrying a firearm without a license, subsequent offense, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and being a felon in possession of a firearm before Judge Howard J. Whitehead.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton insisted on the high cash bail given his record and the 15-year mandatory state prison term Terrero is facing. She told Whitehead the incident occurred last May 31, 2010 when Terrero, driving a blue Honda Accord, allegedly fired a shot into another car, striking 20-year-old Sophy Chhum in the stomach. The incident happened outside 45 Oneida St., in broad daylight at about 1:15 p.m.Terrero is an admitted member of the soldier gang and Chhum a Crips gang member, Buxton said.Buxton said Chhum received significant injuries. The shot came through his left side of his body, piercing his stomach, liver and spleen.Police later recovered the Honda Accord on Ocean Street after a report was called in that a car was blocking a driveway. The car was registered to Terrero’s mother and inside the vehicle authorities found ballistic evidence relating to the incident.Defense lawyer Gary Zerola asked for $25,000 cash bail, saying that the government’s case was “circumstantial,” as he cited his client’s roots in the area.In setting the high bail, Whitehead noted that a “significant bail is warranted, while pointing out the 15-year mandatory sentence Terrero is facing.
