MIAA Roundup: Marblehead girls lax ousts Georgetown

The Marblehead girls lacrosse team needed a late offensive surge in the fourth quarter to put away Georgetown 20-13, in a Division 2 North preliminary at Marblehead Tuesday night.The Magicians had a 9-7 lead at the half. Georgetown tied it 12-12 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. From that point, though, Marblehead outscored Georgetown 8-1.”My team played very well today. Once they started playing their style, good things started happening,” Marblehead coach Annie Pugh said.Leading the Magician attack was: Meggie Collins (5 goals, 1 assist); Tyler Phillips (4 goals, 2 assists); Hayley Braun (3 goals, 1 assist); Kiley Fischer (3 goals, 7 assists); Olivia Raisner (4 goals, 3 assists) and Sarah Noyes (1 goal, 1 assist). Marblehead will square off against Fenwick Thursday.Fenwick 19, Austin 10In Division 2 North first round play at Peabody, the Crusaders met Catholic Central League foe Austin Prep for the third time this season and the results were the same. The offense was in high gear this time around with Grace Celona (9 goals), Becca Graves (5 goals), Anna Moulton (3 goals) and Lauren Moulton (2 goals) leading the way. Kaitlyn McCarthy was in net.Fenwick will play Marblehead Thursday at Marblehead.Framingham 17, Beverly 4In Division 1 North first round play at Framingham, the Panthers put up a valiant effort despite the result. Providing the Beverly offense was Camden Vitale (2 goals), Clare Leathersich (1 goal) and Lainey Bernfeld (1 goal).Beverly finished the season at 12-6.BOYS LACROSSESt. John’s 19, Lowell 4In Division 1 East first round play at St. John’s, the score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter. St. John’s opened up the game in the second quarter by outscoring Lowell 6-1. St. John’s led 9-4 at the half. St. John’s outscored Lowell 10-0 in the second half. Providing the offense for St. John’s was Matt Scalise (4 goals, 2 assists), Jimmy O’Connell (4 goals) and Colin Blackwell (1 goal, 5 assists). St. John’s will play the winner of the North Quincy versus Framingham game Saturday.Sandwich 8, Gloucester 6In Division 2 East first round play, the Fishermen found themselves down 6-2 at the half. Gloucester had a surge in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the halftime deficit.Leading the Fisherman attack was Austin Titus (2 goals), Derek Frashure (2 goals), Josia Pedrosian (1 goal), Eden Lewis (1 goal) and Jeff Kennedy (3 assists).Scituate 18, Marblehead 7In Division 2 East first round play, the Magicians found themselves down 9-2 at the half, and never could recover. Leading the Marblehead offense was: Jacob Maselek (2 goals); Alex Whitmore (1 goal); Ian Maag (1 goal, 1 assist); Brian Gellert (1 goal); Hunter Whitmore (1 goal, 1 assist) and Oliver Gregory (1 goal). Marblehead finished the season 11-8.Bishop Feehan 6, Beverly 5In Division 2 East first round play, the score was tied 2-2 at the half. Beverly led 5-4 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers gave up two goals in the last five minutes of the game to just come up short. Leading the way for Beverly was Nick Pinziaro (3 goals), Dave Rollins (1 goal) and Jake Abate (1 goal). Beverly finished the season 13-6.In other tourney news, Canton defeated Lynnfield 12-5.
