Two German tourists robbed at gunpoint on Route 1

SAUGUS – A pair of German tourists were robbed at gunpoint Sunday night outside a Bank of America ATM on Route 1.According to Assistant Police Chief Leonard Campanello, the victims were walking back to their car around 10 p.m., after visiting the ATM at 1093 Broadway, when they were approached by the suspect.?He was described as a white male, with a stocky build, 5-feet-7-inches, short brown hair, stubble, and was wearing a gray jacket and gray running pants,” he said. “He came out of the shadows, said he had a gun and pressed it to the man?s stomach.”Campanello said the suspect demanded the male victim?s cellular phone and wallet, which contained $200. He then walked over to the other victim, a woman sitting in a car, and took her purse and cellular phone. After grabbing the items, the suspect ran to a gray van and took off on Route 1 south.The State Police are investigating the incident.Anyone with information is urged to call the police at 781-233-1740.
