Lynn cops revert to old look for new cruisers

June 8, 2011 by Robin Kaminski

LYNN – The Lynn Police Department has unveiled a new look to its cruisers with a sleek black and white color scheme.According to police spokesman Lt. Christopher Kelly, Chief Kevin Coppinger decided to return to the more traditional colors to give the fleet of marked cruisers a more rejuvenated look. After surveying several different color schemes of local departments and reaching out to members of the department on the change, the new color choice was unveiled this week as cruisers began patrolling the city.?The look is both cleaner and crisper than its predecessor of plain white with blue lettering,” Kelly said. “This gives the fleet of cruisers a more professional appearance as they patrol our city.”According to the U.S. Department of Transportation?s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), studies have shown that cars with alternating light and dark colors are more visible in low light or high illumination. As a result, Kelly said the cruisers will be much more identifiable to the general public.?The need to be seen as an emergency-type vehicle is important for many reasons,” he said. “It enhances the safety of the driving public to quickly identify an emergency vehicle, and it should also help deter crime in the city.”
