Thunderstorms knock down trees, knock out power in Greater Lynn

Late afternoon thunderstorms Thursday brought down trees in Lynn and surrounding areas, as well as creating power outages throughout the area.Lynn Police said trees were down in several areas in Lynn including Locust Street (where the National Weather Service said a large tree branch was down on power lines) and Grove Street. Ward 6 City Councilor Peter Capano reported that there were puddles up to 2-3 feet in some places, but no major flooding. Capano also said there was a tree down on Richard Street. The National Weather Service reported there was a tree down on a car on Parkland Avenue.National Grid reported online that Lynn had 3,004 customers out of power, the second highest on the North Shore only to Salem, which had 5,451 customers without power.Swampscott had a reported 742 customers without power, though Fire Department Capt. Kevin Thompson called the situation “really minor,” with most of the damage done by broken tree limbs.?We had a couple of trees down in South Peabody,” said Peabody firefighter Greg Jordan. A part of a tree was down on Lynnfield Street, and on Rainbow Road part of a tree took down some power lines. There were also “multiple fire alarms” activated due to the storm.Saugus had less than five customers without power. Capt. Stephen Johnson of Saugus Fire said there was a tree down on Richard Street (unrelated to Richard Street in Lynn) and the National Weather Service reported wires down on Chestnut Street.Nahant Fire Department Lieutenant Dean Palombo confirmed that there was no storm damage in Nahant. “We lucked out,” he said.
