SAUGUS – Town workers had to deal with another water main break on Route 1 late Tuesday afternoon, this time in the northbound passing lane near Kowloon restaurant.Department of Public Works Director Joe Attubato said the break was the fourth or fifth on Route 1 since Jan. 1, but was not as serious as past breaks.”It wasn’t coming up as a geyser,” said Attubato. “It was running into a catch basin, so it wasn’t bad.”The Massachusetts Highway Department had prevented Saugus DPW crews from repairing the water main for fears of traffic delays until after the commute Tuesday. As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, the left and middle lanes were closed as DPW crews began work on the broken main.Attubato said repairs should have been finished around midnight and then the area would have to be repaved.”They’re digging down to it now,” said Attubato said last night. “Traffic is starting to back up. Hopefully they can catch it and repair it around midnight or a little after.”
