Two holes-in-one mark opening day of Tedesco Cup

Matthew Roy

June 25, 2011 by Matthew Roy

MARBLEHEAD?It felt more like football weather than the usual sun splashed early Summer conditions that usually greet the golfers that participate in one of the area’s most prestigious golf tournaments – The Tedesco Cup.The 47th renewal of a North Shore staple was greeted by cloudy and cool conditions that turned into a steady drizzle by days end. The rough weather didn’t deter 118 two-man teams from taking to the venerable Marblehead layout and despite the less than ideal weather, low scores again ruled the day.The teams of Tony Wood-Joe Faia and Jay Pingeton-Richard O’Mera each fired rounds of 7-under 63 to share the lead after a day one that saw birdies, eagles and even a pair of holes in one.Steve Marentz recorded an ace at the eighth hole and Ken Whalley added a one at the par-3 13th in the afternoon. The team of Ed and Michael Holland recorded a superb round of 64 in the worst of the weather conditions to sit in solo third entering today’s final 18 holes. After that, it was a veritable logam of contenders as 29 teams sit within four shots of the lead. The pairings of Dan Santanello-Bob Keogh; Peter Brown-Whalley and Charles DiGrande-Jim Brown sit a tie for fourth at minus-5.Behind them, 12 teams sit tied for seventh at 4-under and another 11 teams recorded rounds of 67 to make it a Saturday shootout for the books. In total, 51 of the 118 teams managed to break par on one of the tougher opening days in recent memory at the T-Cup.In the gross competition for the Carangelo Cup, the team of Matt Sachar and Matt O’Keefe fired a 2-under 68 that was bolstered by an eagle at the 11th to hold a two-shot lead over Kurt Rockstroh and David Scholnick.Conor Kelly-John Lynch III and Tom Burke, Jr.-Rom Emmons are tied for fourth after rounds of 2-over 72.Bryan Benevento and former St. Mary’s and Salem State hockey player Jason Rexinis are also in the mix for the gross title as they shot a round of 73 to sit in a six-way tie for seventh. The gross leaderboard is also tightly packed as 12 teams will begin today separated by five shots.
