MARBLEHEAD?It felt more like football weather than the usual sun splashed early Summer conditions that usually greet the golfers that participate in one of the area’s most prestigious golf tournaments – The Tedesco Cup.The 47th renewal of a North Shore staple was greeted by cloudy and cool conditions that turned into a steady drizzle by days end. The rough weather didn’t deter 118 two-man teams from taking to the venerable Marblehead layout and despite the less than ideal weather, low scores again ruled the day.The teams of Tony Wood-Joe Faia and Jay Pingeton-Richard O’Mera each fired rounds of 7-under 63 to share the lead after a day one that saw birdies, eagles and even a pair of holes in one.Steve Marentz recorded an ace at the eighth hole and Ken Whalley added a one at the par-3 13th in the afternoon.The team of Ed and Michael Holland recorded a superb round of 64 in the worst of the weather conditions to sit in solo third entering today’s final 18 holes.After that, it was a veritable logam of contenders as 29 teams sit within four shots of the lead. The pairings of Dan Santanello-Bob Keogh; Peter Brown-Whalley and Charles DiGrande-Jim Brown sit a tie for fourth at minus-5.Behind them, 12 teams sit tied for seventh at 4-under and another 11 teams recorded rounds of 67 to make it a Saturday shootout for the books.In total, 51 of the 118 teams managed to break par on one of the tougher opening days in recent memory at the T-Cup.In the gross competition for the Carangelo Cup, the team of Matt Sachar and Matt O’Keefe fired a 2-under 68 that was bolstered by an eagle at the 11th to hold a two-shot lead over Kurt Rockstroh and David Scholnick.Conor Kelly-John Lynch III and Tom Burke, Jr.-Rom Emmons are tied for fourth after rounds of 2-over 72.Bryan Benevento and former St. Mary’s and Salem State hockey player Jason Rexinis are also in the mix for the gross title as they shot a round of 73 to sit in a six-way tie for seventh.The gross leaderboard is also tightly packed as 12 teams will begin today separated by five shots.
