MARBLEHEAD – Brian Salzer is leaving Marblehead to become superintendent of schools in the Northampton school district.Salzer is scheduled to become superintendent of the 2,700-student school district in August. He will be negotiating his salary Tuesday. Salzer received $111,000 this year as school business manager in Marblehead.?It?s the only one I had my name in for,” he said. “If I didn?t get that job I was considering applying for (superintendent in) Salem.”Salzer said the Northampton School Committee liked the “complete spectrum” of skills that he brings to the position, which includes experience as a teacher, administrator and school business manager. He laughed when reminded that the new job ends a tumultuous 13 months in his career.Salzer was principal of Swampscott High in June 2010 when former Superintendent of Schools Paul Dulac hired him as school business manager at a salary of $125,000, $1,000 more than Salzer received as principal and substantially more than Dulac budgeted for the position. With Dulac hospitalized for a heart ailment, the School Committee rejected Salzer?s contract and he agreed to renegotiate his salary.Four months ago Dulac?s heart ailment forced him to leave his position early, and Salzer became acting superintendent. He plans to meet with incoming Superintendent Gregory Maas Wednesday to begin the transitional period. One of Maas?s first duties will be to seek and hire a new school business manager.
