Break-ins plague Saugus

Matt Tempesta

July 9, 2011 by Matt Tempesta

SAUGUS – Police are investigating three separate break-ins that occurred around Saugus Thursday afternoon and Assistant Police Chief Leonard Campanello said they may be linked.”It’s a little odd that we’d get three in one night,” said Campanello. “So we’re looking into whether or not they’re related.”The first incident occurred around 12:50 p.m., when a resident on Main Street called to report one of the side windows of his house was broken. Police arrived and determined no entry was gained to the house. At 1:51 p.m. a resident on Summit Avenue reported his door and window were broken and someone had stolen a TV and jewelry from his home.At 4:44 p.m. a resident at Suntaug Estates on Route 1 reported his apartment had been broken into and a Playstation was stolen.Police also responded to a break-in on Tuesday when a man on Denver Street reported his apartment had been broken into. There were also two burglaries over the 4th of July weekend and one attempted break-in to bring the total number of incidents to seven since last weekend.Campanello said electronics are generally the main target in burglaries since they can be sold off quickly and that during the summer months there tends to be a rise in break-ins.”These things kind of come in cycles,” said Campanello. “In the summer they have a better chance of finding an empty house.”With schools out and many families heading out on vacation, Campanello said residents should keep an eye out for their neighbors if they’re away.”Especially during vacation months people should be vigilant and have neighbors watch their house when they go away,” said Campanello.
