DANVERS – The Lynn 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars had to sit and wait for nearly a week to begin their quest for a District 1 title. But once they took the field at Burley Park on Friday, the Lynners showed very little rust.Pelting Beverly pitching for 13 hits, Lynn steamrolled to a 17-4 win that was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.”It was tough sitting around all week waiting to play,” Lynn manager Jeff Earp said. “But obviously the boys were ready to play and they came out and showed it right off the bat.”Lynn is back in action today (2:30) against Saugus and then again on Sunday against Wakefield in a rematch of last year’s final in the 13’s that was taken by Wakefield. Judging by their performance on Friday, the Lynners have plenty of firepower to show off. This one was over almost before the fans even had a chance to settle into their seats as Lynn sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first against Beverly starter Mike Campatelli.Brad Scuzzarella tripled with one out to begin the onslaught. Carlos Cordero followed with a single that gave Lynn a 1-0 lead before Bradley Dill popped up for the second out.Campatelli walked Katie Burt to keep the inning going and Lynn took full advantage. Mike Ausiello singled home Cordero to make it 2-0 before Brent Lozzi walked to load the bases.Chris Lessard then helped his own cause as he emptied the bases with a triple to center for a 5-0 lead. He would complete the outburst by scoring on a passed ball.”We sure were ready to go,” Earp said. “The guys had a lot of adrenaline going and they came out flying.”The second inning proved to be nearly a carbon copy of the first as Lynn batted around again and struck for four more runs. Cordero singled home Scuzzarella before he scored on an error and Dill and Burt would later cross the plate.Beverly would go down quietly in the bottom of the second before Lynn struck again in the third as Scuzzarella scored for a third time. Ausiello and Lozzi added RBIs later to make it 13-0.Beverly finally got to Lessard in the bottom of the third as he walked the bases loaded and surrendered three straight singles before getting Sean Munzing with the sacks still juiced and two outs.Lynn got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth on RBIs from Cordero and Dill. Beverly answered with a run in the bottom of the inning before Lynn closed the scoring with a pair of markers in the fifth.”It’s nice to come out and get a win and the good thing is we can come right back (today) and get back at it,” Earp said.
