Saugus board extends show cause hearing for defunct mall eatery

SAUGUS – The Board of Selectmen voted 4-0 to extend a show cause hearing for Twitters Bar and Grille on Tuesday night, after representatives from the now closed restaurant failed to show up for the scheduled hearing.Tuesday’s hearing was a continuation from an April 5 meeting, in which the board gave owners a six-month period before they move to revoke their unused liquor license. The board also gave Twitters 90 days to find a suitable replacement.”As far as their intent to want to keep this license, there is nobody here to represent them?” said Selectman Stephen Horlick. “The board is not satisfied with their response in this important matter.”Liquor license renewal letters go out to businesses in November, and with no one on hand to represent Twitters, the Board agreed to continue the hearing in October in order to find a replacement restaurant to transfer the license to.Susan Yee, General Manager of the Square One Mall, the location of Twitters, said Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse is interested in leasing the space, provided they can obtain the current license.”They would be able to open in the fourth quarter of this year with a liquor license,” said Yee. “That’s the contingency. I expected (Twitters) to show up to the meeting as their attorney indicated. To my knowledge they’ve done nothing to try and market the place.”The Board also voted 4-0 to allow outdoor seating at Kane’s Donuts on 120 Lincoln Ave. There are currently 27 seats inside Kane’s and an additional 20 seats will now be added to the outside patio. The outdoor seating will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
