SALEM – A Lynn man who allegedly helped a Peabody man flee from the scene after he had allegedly provided two women with heroin, who overdosed last winter, remains free on his own personal promise to return to court.Roberto Vasquez, 24, of 8 Park Road, Lynn, appeared Friday morning in Salem Superior Court for his arraignment, pleading innocent to a charge of accessory after the fact before Judge John T. Lu.At the joint recommendation of Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hemond and defense lawyer Rebecca E. Whitehill, the judge allowed Vasquez to remain free on personal recognizance with the condition he is to have no contact with any witnesses involved in the case. The charge arises out of an incident in Danvers on Feb. 28 when John Coyne, 22, of Peabody, allegedly provided heroin to two young women, who overdosed, and then apparently he dumped them on Irving Street. One of the women was found in a snowbank and the other 20-year-old girl was found in the street. She reportedly had been struck by a vehicle and suffered a broken collar bone and a lacerated liver. Both women were taken to area hospitals for treatment.Authorities believe that Vasquez was aware of Coyne’s actions and helped him escape from the scene.Vasquez is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 29.Coyne, who had been living at 22 May St. in Peabody at his father’s home, failed to appear for his arraignment. Lu issued a default warrant for his arrest at the request of the prosecutor.
