SALEM – A Saugus man suspected of robbing prescriptions from a Walgreens pharmacy in Saugus with a toy gun and speeding from the scene in a stolen car last month was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Superior Court.Glenn L. Boyce Jr., 38, of 19 Riverside Court, #2, Saugus, is charged with armed robbery; larceny of a motor vehicle, subsequent offense; operating a motor vehicle recklessly; operating after suspension of license and leaving the scene after causing property damage. The charges arise out of an incident that happened around 4 a.m. on June 26 when the suspect allegedly entered the Walgreens Pharmacy located at 1228 Broadway in Saugus and stole several bottles of prescription drugs using what was believed to be a gun, which later turned out to be a plastic toy gun.The manager told police the holdup man handed him a note that said, “This is a robbery. Have gun.” The robber ordered the pharmacist to put a variety of pills including OxyContin and OxyCodone in a bag.An officer on patrol in the area of Vine Street apparently saw a man in a gold car looking suspicious because he was wearing a black winter hat.The officer tried to pull him over just before learning of the holdup at the pharmacy. The suspect then accelerated the gas pedal and sped off, but ended up striking a guardrail at the corner of Beech and Vine streets where he jumped out of the vehicle and ran toward Rice Street.Through the help of a K-9, police located Boyce in the bathroom of the Laurel Towers on Rice Street. The indictments handed up against Boyce now move the case from Lynn District Court, where he pleaded innocent, to Salem Superior Court, where he will be re-arraigned within a few weeks. In the meantime, he remains held at the Middleton Jail in lieu of bail.Assistant District Attorney Jean M. Curran is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.Indictments are a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court allowing for a more severe punishment. It is not an indication of guilt.
