MARBLEHEAD – The Recreation and Parks Commission has a new plan for summer weekend trash pickup at Devereux Beach, starting Friday.Recreation Supervisor Mike Lane told the commission Tuesday he has arranged for a cooperative program using volunteers and the employees of Lime Rickey’s, the privately operated restaurant at the beach.Lane said beach volunteers will pick up trash and empty barrels at the beginning and end of their daily shifts. After 4:30 p.m. the crew at Lime Rickey’s will take over. The beach has been a popular destination this summer.”With increased business comes increased trash,” Lane said. He admitted that more trash barrels may be needed.Commission Chairman Chip Osborne said he has discussed trash disposal methods with Director of Public Health Wayne Attridge. Recreation and Parks Superintendent Brendan Egan suggested an online search for case studies in other communities with carry-out food businesses on public beaches. The commissioners acknowledged that an ultimate solution to the problem may require a vote by the Board of Selectmen, which leases the restaurant space to Lime Rickey’s.
