LYNN – Police say an allegedly drunk and out-of-control city man flew into a rage and attacked his relatives with a mini-sledgehammer after arguing with his girlfriend on Wednesday. The suspect, Rudy H. Gomez, 30, of 431 Summer St., #2, was charged with domestic assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned Thursday at Lynn District Court and ordered held in lieu of $500 cash bail. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 17.According to court documents, police responded to a disturbance at an apartment on Summer Street, where they were met by the suspect’s sister. She told police that her brother allegedly had a sledgehammer and was violently swinging it at her and her brothers.Upon walking into the kitchen area, police saw two men lying on top of the suspect, Gomez, while holding him down. All three men were said by police to be sweating profusely and exhausted after wrestling over the sledgehammer, eventually getting it out of Gomez’s hands. The suspect’s brother said Gomez allegedly came home drunk and was upset about an argument he had with his girlfriend. Gomez allegedly became so upset, that he grabbed the sledgehammer and started smashing a plastic chair in the kitchen. When his relatives tried to stop him, he allegedly turned his rage onto them and began swinging the hammer around. While trying to wrestle the weapon away from Gomez, he allegedly struck both men with it.Both victims said Gomez’s behavior allegedly becomes more aggressive when he drinks alcohol. He was taken into custody without incident.
