LYNN – Brendan Powicki pitched and slugged his Wyoma Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the Lynn Shore Mariners Saturday at Pine Hill Field in the 60th annual Lynn City Series.Powicki, a tall fireballer, and Jose Perez, who throws bullets for the Lynn Shore Mariners, hooked up in a strikeout-filled pitching duel for three innings – most of it played in the rain – as Wyoma built a 2 run lead on Powicki’s third-inning two-run double. In the fifth, Powicki chased the clouds away with a high and long rocket for a 2-run homer way over the centerfield fence.Powicki started the game on fire with seven strikeouts in a row; then came a walk, followed by six more K’s. He had a no-hitter going in the fifth until young Andy Duverge broke up the spell with a hit.Wyoma manager Steve Moccia took Powicki off the mound after that, and inserted his talented son Andrew. However, the youngster sustained some arm discomfort, and out rushed the elder Moccia from the dugout to replace him, and eventually bring him for a precautionary X-ray.In came Travis Ryan to the rescue. It was not an easy situation to put him in so suddenly, but Moccia praised his performance. While Ryan gave up a 2-run hit to J.C. Gonzales, making it 4-2, Ryan settled down and fanned the last batter to end the game.Lynn Shore skipper Mark Sullivan, whose Mariners excelled Saturday with a well-coached win over East Lynn, got 8 strikeouts from the strong right arm of Perez.Wyoma, a 17-3 club during the regular season, will return to Pine Hill – host of the City Series – on Thursday against Sean Leydon’s hustling West Lynn Americans.
