SALEM – A Peabody man suspected of burglarizing a home on Lowell Street and stealing cash as well as gold and silver jewelry and precious memorabilia items was indicted Wednesday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Richard S. Belyea, 38, of 78A Lowell St., Peabody, also of Saugus, has been charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, larceny of property more than $250, buying and receiving stolen property and malicious destruction of property.The charges arise out of an incident on the afternoon of May 2 when the suspect allegedly entered a home at 314 Lowell St. by shattering a rear window and stealing hundreds of dollars worth of gold and silver jewelry, and several hundred dollars in cash along with memorabilia items.A female occupant was apparently home at the time of the intrusion, heard a noise and alerted police as the intruder was leaving the home carrying a Harley Davidson pillow case reportedly taken from her parents’ bedroom.Belyea was arrested following an investigation.Assistant District Attorney Michael Patten is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.Detective Joseph Gilroy and Patrolman Daniel Murphy spearheaded the investigation and arrest.Indictments are not an indication of guilt, rather it is a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
