Lynnfield school project discussed

August 3, 2011 by Sara Brown

LYNN – The Lynnfield School Building Committee met Tuesday night in the library of the Lynnfield High School to further discuss plans to continue the expansion of the public high school.A set schedule was set for the project aiming to be finished at the start of 2012 school year. While it is a tight deadline, all believe it is possible to achieve.?We understand the urgency of the over crowding in the high school,” Operations Manager Tom Ellis said. “The sooner everything is done the better.”The Building Committee wants the feasibility and schematic design sent to the Massachusetts School Building Authority by Oct. 14. Once that is accomplished, there will be a bid period for various construction companies to compete for the job.?We want to make sure it meets the character of the school, the school?s needs and the budget,” Ellis said on which construction company gets the job.The schedule expects actual construction to begin in January of 2012. The current plan is to expand the school to have 8 more classrooms. 6 of them will be traditional style classrooms and 2 of them will be labs. These classrooms will be focused on science. Also, there are plans to expand parking for the high school.Construction is expected to last approximately 35 weeks. While the undertaking may seem daunting, the Committee is confident that they can achieve it on time and under budget. “It is a simple project when it comes to construction,” Project Director Sam Bird said. However, before construction to the high school begins, the committee must finish the designs and construction contracts first to get the MSBA?s approval.?We must keep moving forward and keep moving as fast as we can,” Ellis said. “We must try to jump over any hurdles that come our way as best we can.”
