LYNN – A small gas leak at a home on Wolcott Road sent residents into a bit of a panic Tuesday.”I don’t know what’s going on yet, but you never know, houses have blown up before,” said Walter Butler, whose home sits on the corner of Lynn Shore Drive and Wolcott Road. “They were changing the gas meter at the house next door (25 Wolcott) and got a 4 percent leak.”National Grid spokesman Amy Zorich said crews were notified of the situation at 25 Wolcott at approximately 4:10 p.m.”A service technician was on site within minutes to investigate, identified the home and turned off service to make sure residents would be safe,” Zorich said.Craig Jones, who lives at the home in question, sat on his front porch smoking a cigarette as he awaited news of the leak.”I heard that in hot weather, gas starts leaking,” Jones said. “I couldn’t smell any gas in the house, and they (National Grid) said it was very low and not dangerous at all, so we don’t have to leave.”As of 7 p.m., Zorich said the technician was still on scene, working to pinpoint the cause of the leak and begin repairs.”It’s just one house (that’s affected) and everybody’s safe in the area,” she said.No further information was available as of Tuesday night.
