LYNN – Police say a Lynn man allegedly beat a friend with a baseball bat and then held his girlfriend and young children hostage early Tuesday after flying into a drunken and uncontrollable rage following an argument. The suspect, Michael Curley, 30, of 25 Witt St., #2, was charged with two counts of armed assault to murder, four counts of kidnapping, six counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, and four counts of threat to commit a crime. At Curley?s arraignment Tuesday afternoon at Lynn District Court, he stood handcuffed and clad in an open hospital gown and matching hospital pants. A stab wound could be seen on his bare chest, along with several slash marks on his wrist. As Judge James Wexler ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Aug. 23, Curley stood silent, with his shorn head cocked to one side. His defense attorney, Mark Schmidt of CPCS (Committee for Public Counsel Services) stressed that the real story behind the incident had not been fully relayed to the court.?These wounds are defense wounds that can?t be characterized any other way, and clearly you?re not getting the full story,” Schmidt said.According to court documents, police were alerted to the wild incident on Witt Street around 1 a.m.Curley?s live-in girlfriend said Curley had gone out drinking with her friend earlier in the evening. When he returned home, she said he was drunk and allegedly began making rude remarks toward her. As they began to argue, she said, things progressively got worse. At one point, the victim said her friend, who had gone out that night with Curley, stood up for her during the argument. As a result, Curley allegedly turned his rage on her. After allegedly shoving her, Curley picked up a folding table and allegedly hit the victim in the face with it and began choking her.In an attempt to help the friend, the girlfriend jumped on Curley?s back, but ended up allegedly being choked as well by Curley. In the midst of the battle, Curley allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, hit the other victim in the face and all over her body with a baseball bat and allegedly threatened to kill both victims. As Curley allegedly continued to brutally assault his girlfriend, the other victim managed to escape and fled to her mother?s home, calling police for help.Police found her covered in blood at the home, suffering from a facial fracture, bruising and trauma from the incident. She was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment.Court documents show that Curley?s girlfriend declined to press charges against Curley, saying she was scared of him and how he would react. She also allegedly said she loves him, that he?s the father of her young children who allegedly witnessed the attack and that this was the first time he stabbed her. “It?s not like her has done that before.”
