August 17, 2011 by Robin Kaminski

SWAMPSCOTT – A Lynn man is behind bars on a slew of charges after allegedly leading police on a wild ride through East Lynn and Swampscott, shirtless with his pit bull in tow, where he rammed a police cruiser, and drove onto a front lawn, according to police. The suspect, Frederico Angelo Brogna, 25, of 51 Highland Ave., was arraigned at Lynn District Court later that day. He remained silent and lowered his head as Judge James Wexler ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Aug. 18.Brogna?s attorney, Mike Dunphy said his client was injured several weeks ago, which may have contribute to the event.Court documents show that police spotted Brogna allegedly speeding in a red 1994 Toyota Corolla around 10 a.m., refusing to stop for them. Continuing to drive through the city at a high rate of speed, police allege Brogna “took a hard and wild turn” onto Dana Street and sped up even faster as cruisers attempted to pull him over.At one point during the pursuit, Brogna allegedly hit a Lynn police cruiser driven by Officer Geovanni Lopez on the Essex Street commuter rail bridge. Lopez was unhurt, but the cruiser suffered front left fender damage.?He was flying down Essex Street,” said Swampscott Police Sgt. Timothy Cassidy. “He had to be going 80.”Cassidy said Brogna continued down Essex onto Cherry Street, then up to the Fosters Damn area, where he allegedly crashed into the yard of 2 Fisher Ave. After a brief foot chase, police arrested Brogna on the rear porch of the same home, while holding a large pit bull.As a result of the chase, Brogna was charged by Swampscott Police with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, three counts of possession of a class B substance, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, subsequent offense, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, motor vehicle, unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, passing violation, failure to stop for police, marked lane violation, number plate violation, speeding, leaving the scene of property damage, possession of a class D substance, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.Lynn Police charges include negligent operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, motor vehicle, and failure to stop for police.Brogna was previously arrested on July 9 and charged with a serious of motor vehicle offenses.? Thor Jourgensen contributed to this report.
