Last week was a great one to be on vacation, especially if you enjoy the water sports. The hazy, hot and humid weather is great for the kids because it gets them off the computer and on the water. Our boat hasn’t seen this much use in years, pulling water skiers and tubers from dawn to dusk. As for the fishing here on Sebago Lake in Maine, the hot weather this week has driven the fish down to find the cooler more comfortable water. So far we’ve been able to find them, using downriggers and lead core line.We found the fish at 90 feet fishing over 120 feet of water, trolling two mph, which is a little different than in past years. Our favorite and most successful lure is an orange and gold flash king. A close second is the green and silver DB smelt. These two lures have accounted for 5 lake trout and 2 salmon in two outings.UThe drawing for anterless deer permits happened last week. Anyone who put in for zones 9, 10, 11, 13, or 14 will be getting a doe tag. Here is the listing for the remaining zones. If successfully selected, applicants will receive a pink postcard in mid-August.To ensure the arrival of your antlerless deer permit by the beginning of the archery deer season, the postcard and the $5 fee must be returned by September 3rd. Over 37,000 permits will be given out with over 31,000 applicants. I was looking back to thru some of my old records and noticed that in 2007, 28,000 permits were allocated, quite a difference!Applicants not selected through the drawing will receive a yellow re-application postcard in mid-August. Applicants receiving a yellow postcard will have the option to re-apply for a permit in a Wildlife Management Zone for which permits are still available. Re-application postcards will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so re-applicants should mail in (or drop off) postcards to Westborough as soon as possible.Over the counter sales of any remaining permits will begin Oct. 11.uWhile on the subject of hunting, a regulation change allowing deer hunters to use a hinge or break-open action muzzleloader during the primitive firearms season for deer has officially been enacted and will be in effect for the 2011 deer season.Previously, this type of muzzleloader was prohibited from use during primitive firearms deer season. The 2011 Primitive Firearms season for deer begins on December 12 and ends on December 31. Deer hunters are reminded that all blackpowder guns used during this season must load from the muzzle.#This year’s first migratory birds season, the early Canadian goose season will run from Sept. 6-24. This early season provides goose hunters with ample hunting and gives more time to landowners to allow hunters to reduce the size of nuisance flocks of resident geese.Hunters planning to hunt ducks, geese, woodcock, and other migratory birds must also be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP) after purchasing a hunting license. This free registration number may be obtained by calling 1-800-WETLAND.
