SALEM – Bail for a Saugus man charged with robbing prescription drugs from a Walgreens Pharmacy with a toy gun and speeding from the scene in a stolen car was set at $100,000 cash.Glenn L. Boyce Jr., 38, of 10 Riverside Court, #2, Saugus, was arraigned last Friday in Salem Superior Court, pleading innocent to armed robbery; larceny of a motor vehicle, subsequent offense; operating a motor vehicle recklessly; operating a motor vehicle after suspension of license and leaving the scene after causing property damage before Judge Timothy Q. Feeley. As jointly requested by the prosecutor and defense, the judge set the high bail amount, with the option the defense may seek a bail review at another court date, and continued the case to Sept. 30 for a pretrial conference. In the meantime, Boyce remains held in lieu of bail at the Middleton Jail.It was around 4 a.m. on June 26 when authorities say Boyce entered the Walgreens Pharmacy located at 1228 Broadway in Saugus and stole several bottles of prescription drugs using what was believed to be a real gun at the time, but later turned out to be a plastic replica of a gun.The manager said the robber handed him a note that said, “This is a robbery. Have gun and don’t want to hurt anyone,” as he pointed the gun at the manager, ordering him to place a variety of pills, including OxyContin and OxyCodone, quickly into a bag.A Saugus police officer on patrol in the immediate area spotted a man in a gold car looking suspicious because he was wearing a black winter hat.The officer tried to pull him over just before learning of the holdup, but the suspect accelerated the gas pedal and sped off, but ended up striking a guardrail at the corner of Beech and Vine streets. Boyce exited the vehicle and ran toward Rice Street. With the help of a K-9, police located Boyce about an hour later in a bathroom at a Laurel Towers apartment complex on Rice Street.Assistant District Attorney Jean M. Curran is prosecuting the case and public defender Thomas Pierce is his attorney. He has a prior conviction for larceny of a motor vehicleBoyce faces a potential life sentence in state prison if convicted on the armed robbery charge.
