SALEM – A Superior Court judge continued the $10,000 cash bail for a Level 3 sex offender arrested earlier this year for failing to register again as a sex offender and resisting arrest.Ralph H. Carty Jr., 57, of 190 Franklin St., #4, Lynn, appeared for his arraignment Wednesday morning and pleaded innocent to failing to register as a sex offender, subsequent offense, and resisting arrest.Judge Howard J. Whitehead agreed to continue the same bail amount as set earlier in Lynn District Court and continued the case to Oct. 5 at which time the defense may seek a bail review.Carty, in the meantime, remains held in lieu of bail at the Middleton Jail.On May 17, a Lynn Police officer while on patrol on Washington Street spotted Carty, who he had tried to arrest earlier in the day on a warrant and failing to register as a Level 3 sex offender in Boston. As the officer began to approach, Carty quickly bolted down Washington Street, jumping over fences onto Laighton Street.Authorities, with the aid of a K-9, eventually located Carty hiding under a porch in a crawl space. At first Carty refused to come out, but eventually did exit and was arrested by police.Assistant District Attorney Jessica M. Strasnick is prosecuting the case and public defender Alice Jayne is the defense attorney since Carty has been deemed indigent, meaning he has no money to hire his own lawyer. The state will pay all costs, but Carty is responsible for $150 towards his legal representation.
