Roundup: Prep golf outlasts St. John’s of Shrewsbury

The defending Division 1 state champs on the golf course survived the elements and a tough St. John’s of Shrewsbury team on Wednesday at Salem Country Club.St. John’s Prep got a 1-under par 35 from Virginia-bound Nick McLaughlin en route to a 240-242 win over the Pioneers.”They’re one of the best teams in the state every year,” Prep coach Larry O’Neill said.The Eagles return all six starters from the state finals last year and they used that experience on Wednesday. Tim Cunningham shot 39 and Nick Pandelena had a 40 to help the Eagles get by.”They know they have the target on their backs and that everyone wants to beat them because they’re the state champions,” O’Neill said. “But we have everyone back and that’s never happened before so I know we will be good.”Winthrop 45.5, Swampscott 26.5At Tedesco CC in Marblehead, the Big Blue (1-1) couldn’t come up with a win. The two teams will play again today in Winthrop.VOLLEYBALLSt. Clement 3, St. Mary’s 0At Watertown, Sabrina Craft and Taylor Faieta had solid days for the Spartans, who are on the road at Austin Prep today.Lynnfield 3, Lexington 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (1-0) took their three sets 28-26; 25-17; and 25-20.
