Roundup: Saugus girls soccer rolls to Winthrop Tournament title

The Saugus High girls soccer team displayed a potent attack over the weekend, rolling to the Winthrop Tournament championship by knocking off host Winthrop for the title on Sunday, 3-1, after dismantling Northeast Regional in Saturday’s semifinal, 4-0.”It was a good weekend, a good way to start the season. The kids played well as a team,” said coach Chris Coviello.Saugus spotted Winthrop a 1-0 lead before Gabby Cogliano struck for a pair of first-half goals, the first set up by Michaela Perilla and the second an unassisted game-winner. Brianna Evans iced the win with a late penalty kick and keeper Melissa Toomey made a number of outstanding stops at critical junctures.On Saturday, the Sachems blitzed Northeast Regional with four first-half strikes. Evans netted the first goal, followed by Emma Polamino and Jackie Russo (two). Paige Hibbard, Haley DeCristoforo and Arianna Sicari registered assists while Toomey faced minimal pressure for the shutout.Sweeper Stefani Terrazzano and outside defender Ashley Firth anchored the defense.BOYS SOCCERTech 3, English 2The Tigers (1-0-1) prevailed in the consolation game of the Lynn City Tournament, scoring three goals in a span of five minutes for a 3-1 halftime lead, surrendering an early English goal. The Bulldogs (0-2) also scored early in the second half but couldn’t push the equalizer past Tech goalie Jose Alas. Francisco Franco, Belizario Lopez and Emerson Imeo found the back of the cage for Tech.Acton-Boxboro 1, Peabody 0A penalty kick by AB’s Ryan Rose accounted for the game’s lone goal in the 15th minute. Overall, the Tanners controlled play, building a 17-9 edge in shots.”I thought we had a little edge in the first half, then definitely controlled the second half. We just couldn’t finish. I’m very positive about our effort. I thought we moved the ball very well,” said coach Stan McKeen.Stopper Shawn Bernardo and midfielders Tommy Drover, John Ramsay, Colin Mahoney and Alec Sequeira spearheaded a stout defensive effort.Lynnfield 4, Danvers 1The outcome swung on the host Pioneers’ ability to finish. Senior Marco Addonizio scored two goals and assisted on a third and senior George Levantakos contributed a goal and two helpers. Senior Reis VanPuttin rounded out the scoring as Lynnfield opened a 3-0 lead at the break. Coach Brent Munroe praised the steady play of junior keeper Nick Romano in his first varsity start.Junior captain Eric Martin scored the Falcons’ lone goal, converting a header off a cross by senior Ethan Tye.St. John’s Prep 4, Xavier (CT) 3The Eagles returned home with the Forstenberg Cup in tow for the sixth time in seven years after defeating their sister school. Locked in a 3-all tie after regulation, the teams played two 10-minute overtimes before the Prep prevailed in PKs, 6-5. Junior keeper Brian Keough’s stop on Xavier’s sixth spot kick settled it.Senior Grant Bean scored twice and senior Dan Terner added a single goal. Ryan McManus and Carter Ocko picked up assists.Winthrop TournamentSaugus bounced back from a 3-0 semifinal loss to Northeast Regional on Saturday to topple North Shore Voke in the consolation match, 5-1.CROSS COUNTRYClipper RelaysPeabody turned in the best showing among area teams taking part in the 13th annual Clipper Relays at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. Teams consisted of three runners, each running a two-mile leg.On the boys side, defending champion Peabody placed a respectable fourth as the grouping of T.J. D’Amato, Ben Braz and Nick Christensen had a cumulative time of 31:07, maintaining a 5:12 pace to finish 19 seconds behind champion Lowell. The Tanners’ second team of Drew Fossa, Cody Picardy and Anthony Teduscucci placed 24th in 33:10.For the girls, Catarina Rocha set a blistering pace to lead the first Tanners team to a second-place finish in 36:40, 1:12 behind champion Weston. A second Peabody unit of Cindy May, Gabby D’Avolio and Sarah May placed 32nd.”Nick closed strong, bringing us from seventh to fourth. According to some o
