Cross Country: Wrong turn leads to bad day for Revere

A wrong turn at the most inopportune of times cost Revere’s Mike Fitzgerald a chance for a win against Beverly on Tuesday.Fitzgerald was nearly 75 yards ahead of the pack when he missed a turn and dropped to 13th as the Panthers wound up rolling to a 15-48 win.”I feel so bad for that kid,” Beverly coach Sean Dunleavy said. “But he handled it really well. I’ve run on this course and I’ve done it before so it happens to everybody once.”The Panthers (1-0) would end up sweeping the first five spots. Alex Greco broke the Beverly freshman course record with a winning time of 18:13. John Page was second in 19:07 with Mike Scott (19:16), Alex Wheeler (19:37) and Campbell Wood (19:38) rounding out the top five.Revere’s top place came from Rawlings Coglan, who finished sixth in 19:43. Teammate Brian Collins was seventh.Marblehead 15, Salem 50At Marblehead, Patrick Casey was first overall with a time of 17:59. Just behind him was James Wigglesworth in second at 18:03 and Noah Bittermann was third at 18:31.Peabody 15, Salem 50At Peabody, the Tanners (1-0) took the first 17 positions in their season debut. Nick Christiansen won in 15:55 to lead the charge. Second went to Anthony Pedeschi (16:13) with Drew Fossa (16:16); Ben Braz (16:34) and Cody Picotti (16:34) rounding out the first five.Swampscott 15, English 50At Swampscott, Matt Blaney finished eighth (18:00) and Ri Yan was 11th (18:31) as the Bulldogs fell in their opener.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYPeabody 15, Salem 50At Peabody, Catarina Rocha ran 17:45 to lead the Tanners to an easy win. Taking second was Sam Allen in 18:55 with Lauren Barrett (19:07); Sarah May (19:34) and Sidney May (19:47) capping the top five.
