SALEM – A Lynn man police say they caught peddling cocaine was indicted Wednesday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Shawn Davis, 25, of 1 Breed Terrace, #2, Lynn, is charged with a single indictment of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, subsequent offense, stemming from his arrest on the night of June 19 in Lynn.Lynn Police officers Michael O’Connell and John McKenna stopped Davis at the corner of Alice Avenue and Essex Street for violating the open container law after observing him with a can of beer.During a ‘pat frisk,’ police said they seized eight bags of crack cocaine.Because Davis previously was convicted of narcotics distribution in 2008 out of Lynn District Court, he faces a minimum mandatory punishment of five years in state prison.Assistant District Attorney Marsha H. Slingerland is prosecuting the case.An indictment is not an indication of guilt, rather it is a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from Lynn District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
