Soccer roundup: St. Mary’s girls and Williams play to scoreless tie

The St. Mary’s High girls soccer team battled Archbishop Williams to a scoreless tie Wednesday at Braintree.Spartan coach Jim Foley was very happy with his team’s performance despite the fact it ended in a stalemate.”This was a great bounce-back game for my girls. It was a very well-played game by both sides and I am glad how we responded after a tough loss to Spellman,” Foley said.Leading the way on the defensive side was Victoria Viger, Rachel Stueve and Amanda Donahoe. Carol DiMaiti had a strong game at halfback. Bailey Bruckmann recorded her third shutout of the season (6 saves). St. Mary’s is now 2-1-1.Fenwick 3, Marblehead 3At Marblehead, the Crusaders (1-0-1) led twice in this one but had to settle for a tie when, with the score 3-2, Marblehead scored with five minutes left. Rose Fantozzi scored on a penalty kick to put Fenwick on the board first. Center midfielder Becky Mercuro of Saugus scored the other two Fenwick goals. Emily Freedland had two goals for Marblehead and Mollysue Magrain, one. Carolyn Claveau was in net for the Crusaders and Cassie Rodgers for the Magicians.”I thought defensively we played pretty well,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said. “We made some mistakes, but overall, for the second game, we played pretty well.”Beverly 8, Revere 0At Beverly, the Patriots (0-3) ran into a buzz saw. Despite the loss, Venous Hanza played well at sweeper and Rachel Adreani and Brittany Brown had good games on defense.BOYS SOCCERWilliams 2, St. Mary’s 0At Manning Field, the Spartans got off to a slow start and never recovered despite outshooting the Bishops 14-8. Grant McKinnon at midfield and Mike Russo on defense both played well in the loss. St. Mary’s (2-2, 0-2 Catholic Central League) plays Fenwick Monday (7) at Peabody.Salem 2, North Andover 0At Salem, Connor Duncan scored with 10 minutes left in the first half and Brion Likaj added a goal midway through the second half to put the game out of reach for the Witches (1-0). Daniel Collins (8 saves) was in net.St. John’s 1, Xaverian 0At Westwood, the Eagles’ Ryan McManus scored three minutes into the game and the defense took over from there. Jack Gordeau had the assist. Brian Keogh had three saves for the win. The Prep (1-0-1) is home Saturday against Catholic Memorial.
