September 19, 2011 by Matthew Roy

Simply put, the numbers that the Pope John football team put on the scoreboard Saturday were right out of the video game world. The defending Catholic Central League/Small champions opened defense of that title by shattering a school record for points as Lynn native Malcolm Brown caught four touchdown passes, returned an interception for a fifth and added an 82-yard kick return for a sixth score to lead the Tigers to a 62-38 win over Pope John Paul II of Hyannis. On the day, Brown caught six passes for 221 yards while Saugus’ Robert McMaster made his season debut a memorable one, completing 12-of-14 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns. The game was tied at 8-8 in the first quarter before McMaster and Brown hooked up for a 68-yard scoring strike that began a run of 42 unanswered points by the Tigers. Brown caught touchdowns of 16 and 30 yards while adding his interception return for a score to make it 34-8 at the half.Cameron Selfridge ran for a score and Brown caught a 78-yarder to extend the lead to 48-8 before Pope John Paul began to make things interesting, closing the gap to 54-38 in the fourth quarter. Brown, though, capped his day in style by going 82 yards to the house on a kick return.Central Catholic 7, St. John’s 6 (OT)At Veterans Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Prep quarterback Jack Sharrio was tackled on a 2-point conversion attempt as the Raiders picked up the dramatic win.The teams battled through three scoreless quarters before the Eagles saw two chances to win the game slip away late in the fourth quarter.Sharrio fumbled inside the Raider five with less than five minutes left but the Prep held and got the ball back with 30 ticks left. The Eagles eventually drove to the Central 18 but Alex Soucy’s 35-yard field goal came up short. On the first play of overtime, Central’s Matt McDermott hit Henry Rodriguez for a 25-yard touchdown. Tommy Jenoski’s extra point made it 7-0. Sharrio then scored on a fourth-and-goal play for the Eagles, setting up the failed conversion attempt.GIRLS SOCCERNorth Quincy 5, Classical 0At Quincy, Shannon McCleary had a hat trick for the hosts as the Rams ran into a buzzsaw. In other girls soccer action, Marblehead defeated Winthrop, 4-2.BOYS SOCCERSt. John’s 7, Cath.
