September 20, 2011 by Matthew Roy

It was another high-intensity, fast-paced affair between St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick under the lights on Monday at Donaldson Field in Peabody. The Catholic Central League/Large rivals found themselves in another tight game as Brendan Burns’ goal with 18 minutes left in the second half gave the Crusaders a 2-1 win.”It really is a nice little rivalry,” Fenwick coach Andrew Bub said. “And both teams seem to always pipe up for it. It was a hard-fought game on both sides.”The Spartans broke the ice early in the first half when Pedro-Lucas Ferreira finished off an Alexander Alleyne pass. But Fenwick’s Rishad DaSilva scored with 10 minutes left in the half, assisted by Brian Blaisdell, to deadlock the game at 1-1 at halftime.”We were a little loose in the first half with our play but we came out and got after it in the second half,” Bub said. The Crusaders (3-0-1) went ahead when Burns headed home a pass from Chris Poirier in close. From there, the Fenwick defense held the fort.”We were a little sluggish in the second half and weren’t aggressive,” St. Mary’s coach Mike D’Agostino said. “We controlled the first half but we let our heads get down after they tied the game.”Saugus 8, Pope John 0At Everett Memorial Stadium, Andre Ipajuca had a hat trick and Leo Nunziante added a pair of goals as the Sachems (2-2) rolled to victory. We hardly ever go there and win.”Nick Romano stopped all five shots he faced in net.Somerville 4, Salem 3At Bertram Field in Salem, all the scoring was done in the first half as Brion Likaj scored twice and Xavier Polanco had a single marker for the Witches (2-1).GIRLS SOCCERSaugus 3, Everett 1At Everett, the Sachems got the job done at both ends of the field.
