Golf: Classical defeats English

The Classical golf team won seven out of the eight possible spots, as the Rams defeated rival English 51 1/2-20 1/2 at Gannon on Tuesday.Classical coach Jack Morrison was satisfied with his team’s performance.”I think experience was the difference in this match and I am glad my kids played well. We still have a ways to go, but we are progressing every match and I am happy to see that,” Morrison said.Leading the way for Classical (2-2) was No. 1 Steve Nelson (7-2); No. 2 Eric Brazell (6 1/2-2 1/2); No. 7 Mark Brazell (8-1) and No. 8 Brendan O’Neill (9-0). English (0-4) had a win from Ryan Hanlon in the six spot.St. John’s 214, St. Mary’s 149At Gannon Golf Course, the Eagles (5-1) were led by Nick Pandelena (34 points), Josh Wingardner (33 points) and Nick McLaughlin and Zane Quarantiello, 31 points each. The Spartans got a lift from Justin Lappin (27 points), Shawn MacBurnie (24 points) and Chris Price and Ryan Madden, 23 points each. St. Mary’s is 4-1.Swampscott 44, Revere 31At Cedar Glen, Swampscott’s Griffin Hunt tied his first-ever varsity match at No. 8 (4 1/2-4 1/2). Winners for Swampscott (3-1) were: No. 3 Kevin Marascalchi (7 1/2-1 1/2); No. 5 Victoria Malatesta (5-4); No. 6 Derek Mayo (6-3) and No. 7 Peter Wright (6 1/2-2 1/2).Salem 37, Beverly 35At Olde Salem Greens, Salem’s No. 1 Tim Richmond led the way (7 1/2-1 1/2). Other winners for Salem were Cameron Darmody (5-4); Will Parr (5-4) and Joey Malionek (6-3). Salem (4-3) plays Gloucester Thursday.Triton 136, Lynnfield 104At Newbury, the Pioneers (2-3) had a strong team effort despite the result. Leading the way for Lynnfield was Matt Boehner (24 points).Marblehead 42, Peabody 30At Tedesco Country Club, the Magicians (3-2) had wins from Pitch Riley, Trevor Jones, Eric Lundgren and Matt Scholnick. Peabody’s Athan Goulos won 5-4 at No. 1 while teammates Matt MacIsaac, Andrew McCarthy and James Grieves halved their matches. Peabody is 0-1.Winthrop 38, Saugus 32At Winthrop, Saugus had wins from Dan Groark, 5-4; Dave Snow, 6-3, and Eric Penza, 6-3, to improve to 2-2.
