Golf: Peabody’s depth gets win over Classical

Mother Nature has not been kind to the Peabody golf team so far this season, allowing the Tanners to have played only one match so far. On Wednesday, the Tanners didn’t show a lot of rust, though, when they hosted Lynn Classical.The Tanners took five of the eight matches en route to a 43-29 win at The Meadow at Peabody.”It was nice to be able to finally get a match in,” Peabody coach Peter Cronan said.Athan Goulos set the tone for the day with a 6-3 win at No. 1. Andrew McCarthy followed with a 7-2 win at two and the Tanners were off and running.Also taking wins were Evan Gagnon at No. 3 (5 1/2-3 1/2); Nolan Franey at five (6 1/2-2 1/2) and Matt Correale at six (6 1/2-2 1/2). Classical (2-3) got wins at No. 7 from Mark Brazell (5-4) and by Brendan O’Neill at No. 8 (6-3).St. Mary’s 166, Williams 159At Braintree Municipal, St. Mary’s had seven golfers score in the 20s to move to 5-1. They were Sean Mahar (28), Justin Lappin (26), Chris Price and Shawn MacBernie (24), Ryan Madden (23), Cam O’Neill (21) and Angelo Petrucelli (20).Danvers 47, Swampscott 25At Ferncroft, Travis Massey, Swampscott’s No. 1, shot a one-over 37, but his opponent had a four-under 32.Winners for Swampscott were Peter Wright, 5-4 and Victoria Malatesta, 6 1/2-2 1/2.Winthrop 54.5, English 17.5At Winthrop Golf Club, Nick Madden halved at No. 8 and Joe Calnan dropped a 5-4 decision at No. 3 as the Bulldogs fell to 0-5.Lynnfield 136, North Reading 128At Sagamore Spring GC in Lynnfield, Andy Waisnor had a team-leading 30 points as the Pioneers (3-3) eked out a win against the rival Hornets. Nick Eliopoulos had 26 points while Alex Smyrnios and Kris Houda had 24 and 23 points each.
