Swampscott squeaks past Classical again

For the second time this season, the Classical and Swampscott golf teams played a match that came right down to the final putts. And for the second time, it was the Big Blue who came out on top.Despite winning only three of the eight matches, Swampscott’s depth came through in a tight 371/2-341/2 victory at Gannon Golf Course.”We were pretty lucky to pull off a couple of big wins at the top of the lineup,” Swampscott coach Linda Portnoy said. “That got us over the hump because Classical has some very good talent that is coming along nicely.”Trevor Massey set the tone as he shot 1-over par to take a 61/2-21/2 win in the No. 1 position. Classical’s Eric Brazell (51/2-31/2) and Conor McCall (5-4) took the next two matches before the Big Blue’s Matt Videtta delivered a 71/2-11/2 win at No. 4The No. 5 match was halved before Victoria Malatesta gave the Big Blue what turned out to be its big boost with a 7-2 win. No. 6. Classical’s Mark Brazell (6-3) and Brendan O’Neill (71/2-11/2) won the final two matches but the gap wasn’t enough for the Rams to take the win.We’re trying to turn the corner and get better and we’re getting close,” Classical coach Jack Morrison said. “We have to learn to win the close ones because we’re in a lot more matches this year. We have to learn to finish.”Saugus 46, English 26At Cedar Glenn, English’s No. 1 Matt Sencabaugh, No. 2 Matt Bruneau, No. 3 Joe Calnan, No. 4 Christina Lannon and No. 7 Eric Lozzi all lost 5-4. English is now 0-6.Saugus’ (3-2) top golfers were Nick Hegarty, 5-4; Dave Snow, 5-4; Eric Penza, 5-4; Kevin Maggorie, 7-2; and Tyler Stretton, 61/2-2 1/2.Lynnfield 125,Newburyport 123At Newburyport, the Pioneers had a strong all around performance. Andrew Waisnor led the way for Lynnfield (33 points). Steve Lambe had a strong performance (20). Matt Muschella and Nick Eliupoulus both had 19 points. Lynnfield is now 4-3.Salem 41, Gloucester 31At Bass Rocks GC in Gloucester, the top of the order carried the day for the Witches (5-3). Tim Richmond was an 8-1 winner at No. 1 while Cameron Darmody won 51/2-31/2 at No. 3 and Matt Cocozella was a 71/2-11/2 winner at No. 4. Troy Gilbert also took a 51/2-31/2 win at No. 5.St. John’s 225, Central Cath. 245At Salem CC in Peabody, the Eagles (6-1) put together their best score of the year on their home course as Nick Pandelena’s 1-under par 35 led the way. Nick McLaughlin, Jake Danforth and Zane Quarantiello each carded a 37 with Jeff O’Connor adding a 39.
