Boys Soccer: St. Mary’s gets road win at Arlington Catholic

The St. Mary’s boys soccer team went into a traditionally tough place to play at Arlington Catholic on Monday and emerged with a hard-earned 2-0 win over the Cougars.”They were really physical and I was proud of how we kept our composure,” St. Mary’s coach Mike D’Agostino said.St. Mary’s (5-3, 2-3 Catholic Central League/Large) opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark when Mike Russo converted a penalty kick. A little under five minutes later, Nick Moschella fed a perfect pass to Ralph Bertrand, who headed the ball home for a 2-0 lead.From there, the Spartan defense shut the door on AC as Helio Neto needed to stop only five shots for his fourth shutout of the season.English 6, Winthrop 0At Manning Field, the Bulldogs spread the scoring around with six different players – Leo Awokang, Jefferson Fobellah, Richard Charles, Kerlay Der, Malik Diba, and Alejandro Rodriguez – putting the ball in the net. James Kennedy and Alex Zayas combined for the shutout.”Our passing really clicked today,” English coach Kerry King said, adding that brothers Valdrim and A.J. Xhemalji anchored a strong defensive effort.Swampscott 5, Saugus 1At Phillips Park in Swampscott, Kendrick Simpson and Erick Verdu each scored twice as the Big Blue (3-1-1) blew the game open in the second half.”We had some good opportunities and were able to capitalize,” Swampscott coach Eric Robinson said.Dan Copeland added the other goal while Patrick Kennedy made seven saves in net.Danvers 6, Peabody 0At Donahue Field in Peabody, the Tanners (3-2, 3-1 NEC North) trailed 4-0 at the half and were never able to regroup. Jon Amico also had a goal for Danvers.Salem 3, Beverly 1At Bertram Field, the Witches (5-2) got a lift from Robert Abreu (2 goals) and Daniel Collins, who had the other. Demetri Flessas assisted on all three while goalie Jake Theriault kept Beverly in check with eight good saves.
