Roundup: Panthers pounce on Winthrop

The Beverly football team didn’t suffer from a letdown on Saturday following its comeback win over Lynn English last week as the Panthers breezed to a 35-7 win at Hurd Stadium against Winthrop.The Panthers (3-1) broke a scoreless tie on Nick Theriault’s 11-yard run in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Dom Abate then blasted off a 48-yard touchdown run late in the half to propel the Panthers to a 13-0 lead at the half.Abate was at it again early in the third as his 31-yard dash and 2-point conversion upped the lead to 21-0. The Vikings bounced back and made it a game on James Barker’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Jake McKinnon to shave the lead to 21-7.But Kenny Pierce’s five-yard run late in the third was the knockout punch. Nick Kozlowski added an 11-yard run in the final period to close the scoring.FIELD HOCKEYS’scott 1, Peabody 0Swampscott’s Julieanne Marquis scored the lone goal of the game, midway through the first half (Tori Thistle assist). Sophia Kennedy was in net for the Big Blue (5-2).BOYS SOCCERSt. Mary’s 2, Swampscott 0At Manning Field, the Spartans (7-3) picked up their fifth win in a row as Christian Chavez and Alexander Alleyne netted first-half goals while Helio Neto pitched his fifth shutout of the season.Mike Russo and Nick Moschella also had solid games on defense for St. Mary’s, who travels to Cardinal Spellman on Wednesday.St. John’s 1, Weymouth 1At Weymouth, the Eagles (4-1-2) led 1-0 via an own goal in the first half before the hosts tied the game just before the break. St. John’s would dominate the second half but failed to convert on some golden opportunities.GIRLS SOCCERSwampscott 3, St. Mary’s 0At Manning Field, Kelly Birchmore had a pair of second-half markers as the Big Blue exploded to break a scoreless tie.”We struggled at times and they’re a good team,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said.The Spartans are now 6-2-1.In other action, Lynnfield fell to Dual County League power Wayland, 2-0, on Saturday.CROSS COUNTRYSt. Mary’s, Swampscott at Woods Trail RunThe Big Blue and Spartans competed on one of the most challenging courses in New England (in Thetford, VT) on Saturday with several runners having good showings.St. Mary’s top runner was Mike Ksander, who took a fifth place in the fifth seed race. For the Big Blue, who finished 15th as a team, Peter Hale led the way with a 13th-place finish.The Spartan girls saw Sarah Ryan record a 15th-place finish in her race while Hannah King was 58th overall for Swampscott in her competition.
