REVERE – Lt. David Callahan of the Revere Police Department was awarded a certificate of merit at the city council meeting Monday night.Callahan was cited for his involvement in saving numerous lives when a gasoline tanker crashed on Route 1 in Saugus on July 23.?He went to victims that were trapped in cars while the inferno was going on,” City Councilor at Large George Rotondo said. “He is exactly what is good and commendable about the Revere Police.”The police officer wasn?t even on call that day. He was driving by and saw the accident and responded instantly. “He was on his own time and could have called in to the station to have somebody else deal with it,” Chief of Police Terrance K. Reardon said. “However, he does what he does all the time. He always distinguishes himself. I am extremely proud of him.”Callahan thanked the council for the certificate and talked briefly about that day. “It was a terrible thing,” he said. “I will never forget it.”Council President and Ward 5 councilor John Powers summed it up, saying, “This exemplifies what every citizen expects in a police officer.”
