Cross Country: English’s depth makes difference against Salem

The English boys cross country team had five of the top six finishers over a three-mile course, as English defeated Salem 17-49 at English Tuesday night.Leading English was Chris Birotte. Birotte finished first overall (18:56). Other top English runners were: Alex Bonitto, second (19:24); Matt Blaney, third (19:56); Peter Matu, fifth (20:50) and Tyler Comeau, sixth (20:50). English is now 2-3.Swampscott 27, Gloucester 28At Gloucester, the Big Blue had five of the top ten finishers over this 2.89-mile course. Leading the way for Swampscott was Peter Hale (2nd overall, 15:25). Other top runners for Swampscott were: Matt Mahoney, fourth (15:48); Nick Hartmann, fifth (16:09); Ryan Kelley, seventh (16:32) and Matt Nardiello, ninth (16:48). Swampscott remains unbeaten and improves its record to 5-0.Marblehead 15, Beverly 47At Marblehead, the Magician trio of James Wigglesworth, Ethan Levine and Noah Bittermann led the way over this 2.8-mile course. Wigglesworth finished first overall (16:26), Levine finished second (17:16) and Bittermann finished third (17:26). Marblehead is now 4-1.St. John’s 24, BC High 37At Bradley Palmer, leading the way for St. John’s was Jake Smith (2nd overall, 17:36). Other top runners for St. John’s were: Tom O’Shea, fourth (17:39); Tim Loehner, fifth (17:44) and Tim Contois, sixth (17:54). St. John’s is now 2-1.Revere 15, Saugus 50At Saugus, the Patriots’ Michael Fitzpatrick finished first overall over this 3.1-mile course (18:42). Other top runners for Revere (3-2) were: Rawlings Toglan, second (19:20) and Karim Fahila, third (19:35). The Sachems had two personal bests with Nick Monaco (20:55) and Brian Nelson (21:29) both improving on their best previous time by one minute. Saugus is 0-5.Winthrop 21, Classical 36At Lynn Woods, Perry Raymond led the way for Classical. Raymond finished first overall (19:49). Ryan Tesh (24:15) and Matt Fowler (25:40) had solid performances as well. Classical is now 0-5.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYSwampscott 20, Gloucester 36At Gloucester, the Big Blue had the top three finishers overall over this 2.98-mile course. Swampscott’s Hannah King finished first overall (19:58), Allison Carr finished second (19:59) and Alyssa Mauriello finished third (20:23). Other Swampscott runners were: Karyssa King, sixth (21:08); Caitlyn Ludke, ninth (22:09) and Abby O’Connor, 10th (22:36). Swampscott is now 3-2.Revere 15, Saugus 50At Saugus, the Sachems’ Mary Dixon finished with a time of 26:41 over this 3.1-mile course. Saugus is now 0-5.Beverly 21, Marblehead 36At Marblehead, the Magicians had a strong all-around team performance despite the result. Leading the way for Marblehead over this 2.91-mile course was Mary Kaufman (1st overall, 19:39). Janaya Randall finished second for Marblehead (20:54). Carly Robb finished third for Marblehead (21:30). Marblehead is now 2-3.Winthrop 15, Classical 50At Lynn Woods, Classical was in for a long day against the Vikings. The Rams will hope to bounce back in their next meet. Classical is now 1-4.
