School Roundup: Fast start launches Peabody past Saugus

Things were over before they even really got started at Donahue Field in Peabody on Monday as the Peabody girls soccer team stunned Saugus from the outset, scoring three goals in the first six minutes en route to a commanding 7-0 win over the Sachems.”It was an excellent start for us,” Peabody coach Dennis Desroches said. “We’ve had great balance over the last few games and that’s nice to see. Other kids are stepping up and taking advantage of opportunities.”Madison Doherty led the way on Monday for Peabody (8-0-2) with a pair of goals and an assist. Hayley Dowd and Katie Brunelle added a goal and an assist each while Erika Nelson, Taylor Provost and Sarah Sousa had goals.”Peabody is a really good team,” Saugus coach Chris Coviello said.Swampscott 8, Revere 1At Phillips Park, Kelly Birchmore scored twice as the Big Blue (7-2-2) steamed to the win. Tess Gorman; Nikki Rhodes; Emily Cerra; Marina Padovani; Shawna King and Chloe Dorgan also had goals.Beverly 6, English 0At Beverly, the Bulldogs (4-9-1) ran into the proverbial buzzsaw as the Panthers (8-3) scored three times in each half. Karissa Burton had 20 stops for English, who also got a solid game on defense from Taegon Nelson.Marblehead 6, Classical 0At Marblehead, the Magicians led 2-0 at the half before breaking the game open early in the final 40 minutes. Rebecca Unterborn, Cailin Daley and Gabby Carrick had a goal and an assist each to lead Marblehead.Gloucester 3, Salem 1At Bertram Field in Salem, Holbrook Phelan provided the lone goal for the Witches, assisted by Brenna Burke.Danvers 6, Winthrop 0At Danvers, Corey Persson had a hat trick and an assist and Kylie Plaza added a goal and two assists as the Falcons (8-2-1) rolled to the victory. Alex Strangie and Courtney Arnold also had goals.FIELD HOCKEYPeabody 3, Gloucester 1At Peabody, Alaina Warren, Mary Votto and Callie Tsoumas each had a goal as the Tanners staved off the visitors’ second-half charge.Swampscott 6, Revere 0At Phillips Park, Cody Kline had two goals while Julie-Ann Marquis and Alexa Steriti added a goal and an assist as the Big Blue (7-2-1) cruised to the win. Nikki Gioiosa and Tessa Beane also had goals.VOLLEYBALLSt. Mary’s 3, Classical 0At Conigliaro Gymnasium, the Spartans (5-7) took 25-23, 25-14 and 25-16 wins. Emily Morris had 16 service aces and Ann Marie Idusuyi added 12 kills and four blocks.
