SAUGUS – One or more people opened up a water valve at the Saugus Iron Works on Monday which flooded out a pathway at the historic site, said Park Ranger Curtis White.White speculated those responsible “were a couple of minors in exploring the site a little bit more than they should have.”White said the flood damaged the pathway by the rolling mill.?There was maybe a ton of path material that all had to be hand-moved, but the staff took care of that pretty quickly,” he said.White said he was surprised those responsible were able to open the valve.?It was just something that, it doesn?t look like a valve. We wouldn?t have expected anyone to figure that out and I?m sure they didn?t know the consequences of what they were doing,” he said. “They just got curious and it got out of hand.”The part of the pathway that was washed out is also being rebuilt. White said it should be fully handicapped accessible by next season.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected]. You can follow him on Twitter @MattTempesta.
