Golf: Swampscott prevails against Saugus

The Swampscott golf team used its depth to get past Saugus, 42-30, at Tedesco CC in Marblehead on Wednesday. The Big Blue (8-5, 8-2 NEC South) won four matches and tied two others.Kevin Marescalchi led the way with a 6 1/2-2 1/2 win at No. 2; Matt Videtta was a 7 1/2-1 1/2 winner at four and Cameron Swiger added a win in the eight spot by the same score. Victoria Malatesta was a 5-4 winner at No. 7.Peter Wright and Derek Mayo halved their matches in the five and six positions.St. Mary’s 50, Somerville 22At Indian Ridge CC in Andover, the Spartans (9-4) got solid performances from Chris Price; Cam O’Neill; Kevin Dusablon; Ryan Madden; Sean MacBurnie and Angelo Petrocelli.Winthrop 41 1/2, Classical 30 1/2At Winthrop, the Vikings (12-5, 10-0 NEC South) clinched the NEC’s lower division crown as Patrick Brogan; Adam Lundberg; Steve Goddard; Carmen Rich and Matt Gallo all picked up wins.The Rams (4-6, 4-5 NEC South) got wins from Mark Brazell at No. 4 (5 1/2-3 1/2) and Brendan O’Neill at No. 6 (5-4). Brett Erelli halved his match in the three spot.St. John’s 228, Barnstable 241At Salem Country Club, the Eagles (11-1) avenged their only loss of the season with Nick McLaughlin shooting a 2-under 33 to lead the pack. His score beat the next best round by five shots.”Nick McLaughlin shot a great round,” Prep coach Larry O’Neill said. “Conditions were tough. It got chilly and the greens were like lightning.”St. John’s also had good rounds from Nick Pandelena and Brandon Bingel, who each shot a 38; Josh Wingardner, 39, and Matt Bullock and Kevin Kerhulas, 40.”This added up to a really good win for us today,” O’Neill said.Barnstable is now 14-2.Marblehead 53, Gloucester 19At Tedesco Country Club, the Magicians (7-3) got solid play from Andrew Scholnick, who shot even par. Connor Green, Pitch Riley, Trevor Jones and Peter Cormier all shot in the 30s. Marblehead plays Beverly today.Salem 39, Peabody 33At Olde Salem Greens, Tim Richmond shot a 2-under 33 to help the Witches improve to 8-6. He won his match 6-3, as did Cam Darmody at No. 3. Matt Cocozella won at No. 4, 7 1/2-1 1/2. Peabody had wins from Nolan Franey, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Matt Correale, 5-4, and Steve Ferrante, 6-3.
