Football: McMaster, Brown power Pope John to win

Matthew Roy

October 17, 2011 by Matthew Roy

Saugus native Robert McMaster threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns while Lynn’s Malcolm Brown caught 12 passes for 202 yards and both of McMaster’s touchdowns as Pope John took a 21-14 win over Latin Academy in Chelsea on Saturday. The Tigers (4-2, 3-0 Catholic Central League/Small) had to work for this win as their offense was held nearly 10 points under its per game average. Despite that, it was the defense that stepped up as Narvel Cazed had three sacks and now has 14 in six games.Brown and McMaster connected for a 65-yard strike and a 6-0 first quarter lead. The Dragons tied the game in the second quarter before Cameron Selfridge gave PJ a 14-8 halftime lead.Neither team scored in the third quarter before Latin fought back to tie the game on Kyle Dance’s 13-yard run in the final period. But the Tigers had the last laugh as Brown and McMaster shredded the defense again, this time for a 35-yard strike and the winning score.St. John’s (D) 41, St. John’s (S) 20At Shrewsbury, Johnathan Thomas carried 27 times for 223 yards and three second half touchdowns as the Eagles (2-3) picked up their second consecutive win.”Johnny has been on the verge of having a game like this for us,” Prep coach Jim O’Leary said. “We’re starting to mature a little bit up front and we’ve made improvements every week.”Quarterback Jack Sharrio ran for two touchdowns and threw a third to Lucas Bavaro while Lynn’s Gerald Kahari had two critical interceptions that led to touchdowns.Hamilton-Wenham 46, Fenwick 13At South Hamilton, Generals quarterback Trevor Lyons rushed for 287 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns. Lynn native Rufus Rushins had a pair of fourth-quarter scores for the Crusaders.Masco 24, Beverly 7At Hurd Stadium in Beverly, the scuffling Chieftains pulled one of the season’s shockers to date as Dylan Mann rushed for all three Masco touchdowns and Casey Tines tacked on a 23-yard field goal.Beverly (4-2) got its lone score in the final period on an 18-yard Nick Theriault burst that made it 17-7.
