School Roundup: Fenwick girls soccer bests Danvers

The Bishop Fenwick girls soccer team scored a big win on Saturday as Becky Mercuro’s second half goal was enough to give the Crusaders a 2-1 win at Donaldson Field against powerhouse Danvers.”It’s a huge win for us,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said. “We had a game plan and we were able to stick to it.”The Crusaders (6-2-4) did a marvelous job of shadowing Falcon ace Corey Persson as Kim Shinnick held the Penn State-bound Persson off the scoresheet. Fenwick took a 1-0 lead on a Rose Fantozzi goal before Danvers’ Kylie Plaza tied the game just before the half.”They really took it to us in the first half,” Guillemette said.Caroline Claveau made 15 saves in goal to help the lead stand up.BOYS SOCCERBC High 1, St. John’s 0At Danvers, the Prep (8-2-2, 6-1 Catholic Conference) suffered its first league loss at the hands of the visiting Eagles. Ken Fryer made three stops in net while Lev Kazelyan played well in the midfield.FIELD HOCKEYSwampscott 1, Danvers 1At Swampscott, the Falcons got a late goal from Nicole Pszenny to get a point against the Big Blue.Marblehead 1, Saugus 0At Marblehead, Ellie Rousseau provided the only goal of the day midway through the first half, assisted by Catherine Lamoly. Amanda Rosenberg, Liz Caplan and Tyler Phillips also had solid games for the Magicians.Fenwick 5, Central Catholic 4At Lawrence, Colleen Sears scored twice as the Crusaders (5-8-1) ripped off four first half goals on Saturday. Hannah Bethune, Grace Celona and Jen Jordan took care of the other Fenwick goals.
