Revere board wants alternate routes for trucks carrying sand bound for Winthrop Beach

REVERE – The Revere city council wants the mayor to request that Massachusetts Highway Department try finding alternative routes for trucks carrying sand in to Winthrop through Revere. This motion was presented at Monday?s meeting by Council President and Ward 5 Councilor John Powers. An estimated 150 trucks will be driving through Revere on a daily basis, passing Rumney Marsh Academy and Revere High School, to deliver a total of 650,000 cubic yards sand into Winthrop to be used in a recently state-approved project to replenish its main beach.?I was prompted to make this motion when I found out that 150 trucks will be driving through Revere on a daily basis for an 18-month period,” Powers said.Powers believes that this could possibly create a dangerous situation for Revere. “We all know kids cross the streets in that area when school is in session,” he said. “It would be dangerous to allow this to happen.”Powers is also concerned what this will do to traffic to the American Legion Highway and Mahoney Circle area. “It is already difficult to get through there,” Powers said. “I can?t possibly imagine 150 trucks getting through there.”Ward 1 Councilor Richard A. Penta agreed with Powers. “This motion definitely has merit,” Penta said. “If this happens it will be devastating to Revere.”Penta called for action. “Something has to be done,” Penta said. “We have to keep our eye on it and stay on the ball.”Powers hopes that the mayor will continue to work with him and the council on this issue. “I know the mayor agrees with me on this,” Powers said. “Hopefully, he will fight to make something happen.”In other business, the council wants the mayor to direct the Department of Public Works to immediately repair the sinkhole on True Street near the entrance of Revere High School. This motion was presented by Powers as well.?There are neighbors that walk along that area and it is very unsafe,” Powers said. “Something needs to be done.”The council also wants to see the mayor direct the police department to enforce speeding issues on True Street.?Traffic enforcement is very important there,” Powers said. “I would like periodic traffic enforcement to reduce the speeding in that area.”
