SWAMPSCOTT – A Marblehead resident will face civil citations after he allegedly drove into a Somerville police officer who was escorting a charity motorcycle ride.Somerville Police Officer Oswaldo Martinez “is home resting, has a broken wrist and overall bruises on his body but, other than that, he’s doing okay,” said Somerville Police Deputy Chief Paul Upton. He said that Martinez would be off-duty for a couple of months due to the injuries.According to an email from Swampscott Police Sgt. Detective Tim Cassidy, Martinez was leading a charity motorcycle ride east on Humphrey Street at 1:57 p.m. on Sunday when several witnesses reported that a car cut off Martinez and prompted the crash.”Several witnesses stated that a vehicle being operated by Bradford Fields of Swampscott cut off the officer, causing him to crash his motorcycle into the side of Fields’ motor vehicle as it turned onto Alden Road,” Cassidy wrote. “One witness observed seeing the officer with his lights and siren activated and observed the officer fly over his handlebars and over the hood of Fields’ motor vehicle.”There was no listing for Fields in Swampscott, but a Bradford Fields, 25, of 21 Russell St., Marblehead declined to comment about the incident when contacted Wednesday, according to a woman who answered the phone. The 23rd Annual Harley Davidson Halloween Witch Ride traveled from Everett to Salem Sunday afternoon and organizers expected approximately 2,000 riders. The ride benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.Cassidy did not specify the citations that would be issued and could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
